In memory of
Rick Corrales · Photojournalist · 1984 Pulitzer Prize · Los Angeles Times
— About the grant
“Every person carries a story worth telling. My father spent his life proving that.”
My father, Rick Corrales, was a celebrated Mexican American photojournalist whose work helped the Los Angeles Times win a Pulitzer Prize for the landmark Latino Series in 1984. He photographed communities whose stories were rarely seen in mainstream media. He believed that being photographed with dignity and care could change how a person understands their own worth.
He passed away in 2005. This grant is named in his honor.
The Rick Corrales Grant awards a limited number of portrait sessions each year to individuals whose stories deserve to be preserved, and whose access to this experience would otherwise be limited. There is no cost to apply. Recipients are selected based on their story, not their means.

What grant recipients receive
The session
A full portrait session — studio or on location — designed around your story. Unhurried. Warm. Completely yours.
The images
10–15 fully edited, curated digital images delivered to a private gallery. One archival print, mailed to you.
Your story
A short written piece by Kristina about you and your story, included with your archival print. Something to keep.
Who should apply
The Rick Corrales Grant is open to anyone with a story worth telling — a life well lived, a moment of survival or transition, a chapter that has never been documented with the care it deserves. There is no age requirement. There is no right kind of story.
Applications are encouraged from individuals in underserved communities, elders whose stories are rarely preserved, caregivers, survivors, and anyone who has never had a portrait made that truly reflects who they are.
4–6 grants are awarded each year, in two cycles: spring and fall.
How to apply
Applications are simple — just a short description of who you are, what you carry, and why this moment feels important to document. There is no formal process. Write to me the way you would write to a friend.
In his memory
Rick Corrales photographed the stories mainstream media overlooked. This grant continues that work — one portrait at a time.
